Real Madrid Near Agreement with Thibaut Courtois on Contract Extension Until 2028

Real Madrid are closing in on a contract extension for Thibaut Courtois as the Spanish giants look to secure stability in goal for the coming seasons. The Belgian goalkeeper is currently under contract until June 2027, but the proposed deal would keep him at the Santiago Bernabéu until June 2028. The move reflects the club’s intention to retain one of its most trusted players while maintaining a competitive squad in domestic and European competitions.
According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, Real Madrid have reached an agreement in principle with Courtois over the extension. The deal is reportedly close to being finalized, although the official signing has yet to be confirmed. Madrid generally prefer to offer one-year contract extensions to players over the age of 30, allowing the club to retain experienced stars while maintaining flexibility in its long-term planning.
Courtois remains an important figure in Madrid’s plans thanks to his experience and performances between the posts. Extending his contract would provide continuity in a position where reliability is crucial, particularly as the team continues to compete for major trophies. Keeping the Belgian international would also give the club more time to plan its next move rather than rushing into a major goalkeeping decision.
Despite their intention to retain Courtois for another season, Madrid are also expected to consider potential long-term replacements. Reports from journalist Miguel Serrano have identified Gregor Kobel, Bart Verbruggen, and Diogo Costa as possible candidates, although the club has not officially confirmed any interest in the three goalkeepers. Monitoring younger alternatives would allow Madrid to prepare for the future while continuing to rely on Courtois in the short term.
Courtois has made nine appearances for Real Madrid across all competitions this season, conceding nine goals, according to the available figures. His reported contract extension would strengthen the club’s immediate goalkeeping plans while giving its management more time to assess future options. With negotiations reportedly progressing well, Madrid appear keen to ensure that one of their key players remains part of the squad through at least the 2027–28 season.
