Indonesia Climbs FIFA Rankings After ASEAN Cup Triumph, Closing In on a 20-Year Milestone
Indonesia’s national football team has made another significant step forward in the latest FIFA world rankings, moving up two places following its impressive performance in the 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup. The Garuda squad secured the title after defeating Thailand 4-2 in a penalty shootout in the final, following a 2-2 draw at the end of extra time. The victory not only brought Indonesia another important achievement on the international stage but also boosted its position in the global standings.
Indonesia earned an additional 3.35 points from the result, bringing its total to 1,166.50 points and lifting the team to 116th place in the FIFA rankings. This latest improvement puts Indonesia ahead of Kazakhstan, which has 1,166.26 points, while Zambia sits in 118th place with 1,156.74 points. Although the difference in points remains relatively small, the rise reflects the positive impact of Indonesia’s recent performances and the team’s growing competitiveness against regional opponents.
The move to 116th place is particularly meaningful when viewed against Indonesia’s ranking history over the past two decades. The national team first dropped out of the FIFA top 100 in November 2005, when it fell to 103rd place after spending several years among the world’s top 100 teams. Between January and May 2006, Indonesia remained at 110th before experiencing a sharp decline to 139th in July of the same year. Since then, the team’s ranking has fluctuated considerably, making its current position an encouraging sign of progress.
One of the most difficult periods came in 2016, when Indonesia fell to 191st in the world. The decline was closely linked to FIFA’s suspension of the Football Association of Indonesia, which limited the national team’s opportunities to compete in international matches. With fewer chances to earn ranking points, Indonesia struggled to maintain its position and reached its lowest recorded standing. The contrast between that difficult period and the team’s current progress highlights how important consistent international competition and positive results can be for long-term development.
Indonesia’s latest rise offers renewed hope of returning to the FIFA top 100 for the first time in more than two decades. While reaching that target will require sustained performances and further victories against strong opponents, the ASEAN Cup triumph provides a valuable foundation for future progress. Maintaining momentum in upcoming international fixtures will be essential if the Garuda squad hopes to continue climbing the rankings and establish itself more firmly on the global football stage.
