Luka Modric Keeps Retirement Plans Open as the 41-Year-Old Midfielder Follows His Body’s Signals

Luka Modric has yet to decide when he will bring his remarkable football career to an end, insisting that his passion and ambition remain as strong as ever at the age of 41. The AC Milan midfielder continues to enjoy playing at the highest level and believes he can carry on as long as his physical condition allows. Rather than setting a fixed retirement date, the Croatian veteran prefers to take things one step at a time and assess how he feels throughout the season.
In an interview with Partidazo de COPE, Modric explained that he still has the energy and motivation needed to compete. However, he is reluctant to make any long-term promises about his future, recognising that his decision will ultimately depend on his body. For now, he intends to focus on each match individually, allowing himself time to evaluate his condition before deciding whether to continue for another few months or even another year.
Modric joined AC Milan in the summer of 2025 and made 34 appearances during his first season with the Italian club, scoring two goals and providing three assists. Despite Milan missing out on Champions League qualification following a disappointing end to the previous campaign, the midfielder remained committed to the project and extended his contract during the summer. His decision reflects his continued desire to compete in European football and contribute to the team’s ambitions.
His performances have also demonstrated why age has not diminished his value on the pitch. Milan manager Ruben Amorim has continued to rely on Modric in Serie A, balancing his playing time with periods of rotation. The midfielder has also maintained his involvement with the Croatian national team during international breaks. Amorim has praised his enthusiasm in training, highlighting the youthful spirit and eagerness that continue to make him an influential presence within the squad.
Meanwhile, Croatia’s elimination from the 2026 World Cup following Gonçalo Ramos’s late goal for Portugal has added another chapter to Modric’s international career. The tournament may have marked his final appearance at a World Cup, although his future in football remains undecided. With his competitive drive still intact, Modric is determined to keep playing for as long as he feels capable. Whether he chooses to retire soon or extend his career further, his decision will depend on his fitness, motivation and ability to continue performing at the highest level.
