Senegal Takes Africa Cup of Nations Title Dispute to CAS

Senegal Takes Africa Cup of Nations Title Dispute to CAS

The long-running dispute over the official winner of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations has entered a decisive stage, with Senegal taking its case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne, Switzerland. The appeal challenges the Confederation of African Football's decision to strip Senegal of the title and recognize Morocco as the official champions.
The controversy dates back to the final in Rabat, where Senegal defeated hosts Morocco 1-0 after extra time. The match was disrupted late in normal time when Senegal's players temporarily left the pitch for around 14 minutes following a contentious penalty decision awarded to Morocco. The penalty was ultimately missed, and Senegal went on to secure victory in extra time.
Two months later, CAF accepted Morocco's appeal and overturned the result. The governing body ruled that Senegal's temporary walkout amounted to a forfeit, changing the official result to a 3-0 victory for Morocco. The decision dramatically altered the outcome of a final that had already been settled on the pitch.
Senegal subsequently filed an appeal with CAS in March, arguing that temporarily leaving the field should not be treated as a permanent withdrawal from the match. Their legal team is also expected to challenge the interpretation of the referee's authority, maintaining that decisions made during the match should carry significant weight when determining the result.
Morocco and CAF, however, are relying on the tournament regulations, which state that a team leaving the field without the referee's permission can be considered to have forfeited the match and be removed from the competition. A three-member independent CAS panel has now heard arguments from all sides during a closed hearing in Lausanne. The final ruling will determine whether Senegal retains its title or Morocco's controversial claim to the championship is upheld.
