Portugal Suspend Cristiano Ronaldo as Disciplinary Investigation Follows National Team Walkout

The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) has imposed a provisional suspension on Cristiano Ronaldo after opening disciplinary proceedings over his departure from the national team camp. The case has been referred to the federation’s Disciplinary Investigation Commission for further review. The decision comes amid growing tension surrounding the 41-year-old forward’s relationship with Portugal’s coaching staff and his responsibilities to the national team.
Ronaldo reportedly left the Portugal squad ahead of the UEFA Nations League fixture against Denmark following a disagreement with head coach Jorge Jesus. The Al Nassr star was reportedly unhappy after being left on the bench during Portugal’s match against Norway, believing that the coach had failed to honour a previous commitment regarding his playing time. The incident quickly became a major talking point, raising questions about the circumstances behind his departure.
Despite the controversy, Ronaldo has publicly apologised to his teammates and supporters, leaving the final decision on any punishment to the FPF. However, the federation has continued with its disciplinary process, which officially began on October 9, 2026, and has been classified as an urgent case. Under FPF regulations, players who leave or miss national team training sessions or matches without a valid reason may face suspensions ranging from one to six months, along with financial penalties. Further details of the investigation remain confidential while the proceedings continue.
Away from the international dispute, Ronaldo maintained his strong form for Al Nassr in the Saudi Pro League. He scored the opening goal in his club’s 3-0 victory over Diriyah on Friday night, capitalising on a rebound after the goalkeeper saved Kingsley Coman’s attempt. The strike brought Ronaldo’s career total to 980 goals, further strengthening his reputation as one of football’s most prolific scorers. His performance also demonstrated that the ongoing disciplinary issue had not prevented him from contributing on the pitch.
Al Nassr’s victory allowed the club to draw level on points with Saudi Pro League leaders Al Qadsiah after eight rounds of the competition. Meanwhile, Ronaldo has reaffirmed his desire to continue representing Portugal despite the uncertainty surrounding his international future. He has also indicated his willingness to accept the consequences of the FPF’s decision. The final outcome of the investigation remains unknown, leaving Ronaldo’s immediate future with the national team dependent on the federation’s disciplinary ruling.
