Why Indonesia Must Boost Its FIFA Ranking Immediately

The Asian Football Confederation is preparing to revolutionize regional football with the planned rollout of the AFC Nations League in 2030. This ambitious new tournament structure will completely overhaul the traditional qualification pathways for both the FIFA World Cup and the AFC Asian Cup. By dividing forty-seven member associations into a tiered league system with promotion and relegation, the confederation aims to elevate the overall quality and competitiveness of matches across the continent.

Under the proposed structure, the top two divisions will each accommodate eighteen national teams, leaving the remaining eleven countries to compete in the third tier. Participating teams in the upper divisions will face a demanding twelve-match home-and-away schedule. Most importantly, performance in the top division will serve as the sole gateway to international glory, offering direct World Cup qualification spots to the top six finishers alongside additional playoff opportunities for those rounding out the upper standings.

To ensure a smooth transition into this new era, the governing body plans to introduce a preliminary bridge tournament running from 2028 through 2029. This transitional competition will double as the primary qualification route for the 2030 World Cup. Featuring three groups of six in the highest tier, the top two teams from each group will secure automatic qualification, while lower-placed sides will be forced to battle through high-stakes play-off rounds to keep their dreams alive.

This radical shift presents a monumental challenge for the Indonesian national team, whose current FIFA ranking places them in the second tier. Under the upcoming framework, second-division status completely eliminates any possibility of qualifying for the World Cup. Consequently, head coach John Herdman and his squad face immediate pressure to maximize their performance and collect as many ranking points as possible over the coming months to push into the top division before the new system takes full effect.

Securing a spot in the primary tier is no longer just a matter of pride, but an absolute necessity for Indonesia's long-term international ambitions. The national team must approach every upcoming fixture with maximum intensity to elevate its global standing. How effectively the team responds to this structural shakeup will ultimately determine whether Indonesia can compete against Asia's elite on the world stage or remain locked out of football's biggest tournament.
