Niko Kovac Set to Extend Borussia Dortmund Contract Until 2029

Borussia Dortmund are reportedly close to securing Niko Kovac’s future as head coach with a new contract running until the summer of 2029. His current agreement is due to expire on June 30, 2027, but the club are keen to extend his stay after seeing encouraging results under his leadership. According to Sport Bild, an agreement has already been reached, with only the final paperwork and signature reportedly remaining.
Kovac took charge of Dortmund in February 2025 and has since become an important part of the club’s plans. During his tenure, the Croatian coach has overseen 79 matches across all competitions, collecting an average of 2.03 points per game. Those numbers have helped strengthen the case for keeping him at Signal Iduna Park beyond his existing contract.
Dortmund’s decision also comes after a period of stability within the club’s management structure. Several senior figures, including Carsten Cramer, Lars Ricken, and Thomas Treß, have already agreed to new contracts. Extending Kovac’s deal would allow Dortmund to maintain continuity both in the boardroom and on the coaching staff as the club works toward its long-term objectives.
Kovac has made an especially strong start to the 2026/27 campaign. Dortmund have won each of their first four matches, leaving them as the only team in the competition to maintain a perfect record at this stage. That run has placed the club at the top of the league table and provided further evidence of the progress made under Kovac.
The planned extension would keep Kovac at Dortmund until 2029 and give the club greater stability on the touchline. With the team competing for success in domestic and European competitions, maintaining the current coaching structure could become an important part of Dortmund’s strategy. The final signing is now expected to complete what would be a significant commitment to Kovac’s continued leadership.
