France
Zidane's Defensive Masterclass ContinuesZidane could not have scripted a better start to his France reign. Two away matches, two 1-0 victories, and zero goals conceded — a testament to the tactical discipline and defensive organisation he has instilled in the squad. Les Bleus top the group with a maximum six points.
The hallmark of France's opening games has been defensive solidity. Mike Maignan has kept clean sheets in both fixtures, while the centre-back partnership of Dayot Upamecano and Jérémy Jacquet has looked assured. In midfield, the energy of Eduardo Camavinga and Andy Diouf has provided control, and the attacking trident of Bradley Barcola, Ousmane Dembélé and Désiré Doué has offered pace and movement in the final third. Michael Olise's late winner off the bench against Belgium further underscores the squad's remarkable depth.
However, Zidane has been dealt a significant blow ahead of this home fixture. Captain and talisman Kylian Mbappé is sidelined with a left knee injury sustained while scoring against Turkey. The Real Madrid forward has already returned to Madrid, and Zidane opted not to replace him. Additional absentees include Ibrahima Konaté (knee sprain), William Saliba (back injury), Aurélien Tchouaméni, Warren Zaïre-Emery, and Mattéo Guendouzi
Despite the long injury list, Zidane is expected to restore many of his first-choice players. Dembélé, Olise and Manu Koné are set to return to the starting lineup after being rested or rotated for the Belgium game.
Italy
Mancini's Youth Revolution Gathers PaceMancini's second spell in charge of the Azzurri has been a tale of two halves. A disappointing 2-0 home defeat to Belgium in the opening match raised eyebrows, but Italy responded in spectacular fashion by thumping Turkey 4-1 away in Bursa. Goals from Alessandro Bastoni, Davide Frattesi, Michael Kayode — on his senior debut — and Pio Esposito showcased the attacking flair Mancini is beginning to unlock.
The performance against Turkey was particularly encouraging because the goals came from a variety of sources. Kayode's marauding runs from right-back caught the eye, and 19-year-old Pio Esposito's composed finish highlighted the emerging talent at Mancini's disposal. Sandro Tonali remains the midfield lynchpin, while Gianluigi Donnarumma and Bastoni provide a solid defensive foundation.
That said, defensive questions remain after the Belgium debacle, and the step up in quality from Turkey to France will be considerable. Giacomo Raspadori has withdrawn from the squad with a right thigh strain, joining Nicolò Zaniolo, Federico Dimarco and Bryan Cristante on the injury list. On the positive side, Nicolò Barella and Riccardo Calafiori return to the starting lineup, and Bastoni is back from suspension.
Prediction
While Mbappé's absence is undeniably significant, France have already proven they can grind out results without their captain. Zidane's tactical rigour and Les Bleus' defensive resilience — coupled with home advantage — should ultimately tip the scales. Italy's attacking resurgence against Turkey was impressive, but their defensive vulnerabilities are likely to be exposed by France's speed and movement in the final third. Expect a tight, fiercely contested match with France edging it.
